SCA commemorated the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day by holding 9 Earth Day service events around the country. Events were located in Chicago, Boston, Detroit, Washington, DC, Pittsburgh, Houston, Dallas, Oakland/San Francisco and Seattle. Working with ARAMARK nationally as well as with community‐based organizations in each city, SCA and our partners engaged 1,000 volunteers to complete nearly 5,000 hours of conservation service. 2010 Earth Day projects reflected the nation's growing interest in urban green spaces and community gardens. Coast to coast, volunteers removed invasive plants, built trails and maintained or developed community gardens and outdoor learning classrooms. These efforts are an ongoing piece of SCA's Community Programs which run year round to provide training and conservation service opportunities for youth in these ten cities. SCA high school‐aged members in each city played an important role in the planning, implementation and leadership in each Earth Day event.

Named for a NACUFS founder, past president and highly regarded innovator, the Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards celebrate exemplary menus, presentations, special event planning, and new dining concepts, and provide an avenue for sharing ideas and creative presentations in campus dining services. The University of North Carolina- Wilmington, an ARAMARK account, was recognition for their New Orleans themed lunch event that featured traditional bayou food, music and festivities. The lunch was created to help build awareness and promote the University's Synergy Common Reading Group's book of the month, a novel about New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.

Boston University Dining Services, an ARAMARK account since 1976, has been recognized by the City of Boston as a 2012 Sustainable Food Leader for its efforts to provide the freshest, local food in the most sustainable manner. The award commended BU Dining Services for committing 23% of their annual food budget towards the purchase of items from local farms and producers within a 250-mile radius. BU Dining Services also composts at 19 of their 22 facilities on campus.

The African Food Festival in the spring of 2010 was a product of teamwork between the school’s dining services department, its contract service provider, Aramark, the school’s Multicultural Affairs Dept. and student group Africans@Heart. Together, they developed an Africa-themed event that featured authentic dishes from different regions of the continent. It was recognized for going beyond the traditional “monotony breaker” function by emphasizing a strong educational component and food execution with a high degree of sophistication (the dishes were authentic and used ingredients that were carefully sourced). ARAMARK Dining Services at Mississippi State University has been named "Employer of the Year" by the Rehabilitation Association of Mississippi. The award honors the company's commitment to promoting employment for persons with disabilities, an accomplishment achieved in partnership with the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Service's AbilityWorks program. AbilityWorks subcontracts with companies such as ARAMARK, helping assist the disabled with employment. The rehabilitation association's "Employer of the Year" recipient is selected by organization board members from a nominee pool. The award is given to the individual, firm or group of employers who best promote employment for persons with disabilities above and beyond what is required by local, state or federal laws.

The University of Virginia's student-initiated food composting program has received a silver medal in the 2010 Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards. The awards recognize the significant contributions of environmental and conservation leaders in three categories: environmental projects, environmental programs and land conservation. They are given to businesses and industrial facilities, government agencies and individuals. The University and students partnered with Aramark, the food service company that operates U.Va.'s dining facilities, to remove about 2 1/2 tons of food waste from the Observatory Hill Dining Hall per week. The waste food is pulped and brought to an Earlysville farm, where it is composted. Read More

UVA Dining: Exemplary Environmental Enterprise from Virginia Department of Environmental Quality's VEEP (Virginia Environmental Excellence Program)

UVA is the first university in the state to earn Exemplary Environmental Enterprise (E3) status from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. On top of using trayless dining and implementing a new composting program, dining services is also part of the Campus Kitchens Project, a student-powered hunger relief partnership. UVA's housing division is also being recognized for green efforts, like using fluorescent light bulbs. It is also in the middle of demolishing 11 dorms and replacing them with seven new LEED certified buildings. Read More

Every two years, QSR's Applied Technology Awards recognize the best innovations that improve and enhance the restaurant experience for operators, staff, and customers. The touch-screen kiosk technology, which allows customers to build their own burger, was developed by Wireless Ronin.

The Engrained Café at Arizona State University (ASU), operated by ARAMARK, received an Award of Merit recognition from the Valley Forward Association as a unique leader in Environmental Stewardship. The Valley Forward Association, based in Phoenix, is an organization active in preserving the environment and livability of the Valley's communities, serving as a forum for public discussion, dialogue and action. Second place was awarded to Patria Maguire, a catering sous chef for the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala., The nationwide California Strawberry Inspirations Recipe Contest encouraged chefs to create an innovative, new California strawberry menu concept, utilizing strawberries in a unique, healthful application.
