      <description>Pacific University has been selected by ARAMARK Higher Education as a pilot location to implement a Food Donation Connection (FDC) program to help feed the hungry.  During a 15-week pilot program that began in April and will run through the summer, surplus food will now benefit two local relief agencies - Salvation Army of Hillsboro and the Shelter at Orenco Station (SOS).  In the first four weeks of the program, Pacific and ARAMARK have donated more than 600 pounds of prepared food to these local organizations.</description>

      <description>SCA commemorated the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day by holding 9 Earth Day service events around the country. Events were located in Chicago, Boston, Detroit, Washington, DC, Pittsburgh, Houston, Dallas, Oakland/San Francisco and Seattle. Working with ARAMARK nationally as well as with community‐based organizations in each city, SCA and our partners engaged 1,000 volunteers to complete nearly 5,000 hours of conservation service. 2010 Earth Day projects reflected the nation's growing interest in urban green spaces and community gardens. Coast to coast, volunteers removed invasive plants, built trails and maintained or developed community gardens and outdoor learning classrooms. These efforts are an ongoing piece of SCA's Community Programs which run year round to provide training and conservation service opportunities for youth in these ten cities. SCA high school‐aged members in each city played an important role in the planning, implementation and leadership in each Earth Day event.</description>

      <description>The University of Virginia's student-initiated food composting program has received a silver medal in the 2010 Governor's Environmental Excellence Awards.

The awards recognize the significant contributions of environmental and conservation leaders in three categories: environmental projects, environmental programs and land conservation. They are given to businesses and industrial facilities, government agencies and individuals.

The University and students partnered with Aramark, the food service company that operates U.Va.'s dining facilities, to remove about 2 1/2 tons of food waste from the Observatory Hill Dining Hall per week.
